Guru Gorakhnath is one of the most influential yogis and spiritual masters in the history of Hindu spirituality. He is the central figure of the Nath Sampradaya, a Shaivite yogic tradition devoted to Lord Shiva and the practice of Hatha Yoga, spiritual discipline, and inner awakening.

Below is a clear historical and spiritual overview.

1. Origins and Birth

The historical period of Guru Gorakhnath is debated among scholars.

Most traditions place him between 11th–12th century CE, though some Nath traditions believe he appeared earlier and even lived across multiple eras.

Key beliefs about his birth:

  • Many traditions say he was miraculously born through yogic power.
  • He is considered the spiritual son or disciple of Matsyendranath, the founder of the Nath yogi lineage.
  • Nath yogis believe he was an incarnation blessed by Lord Shiva.

A famous legend says that Matsyendranath gave sacred ash to a childless woman.

She threw it away, but years later Gorakhnath appeared from that place through divine power.

2. The Nath Sampradaya

Guru Gorakhnath organized and spread the Nath Yogic Tradition.

Main teachings include:

The Nath order later became known for Kanphata Yogis (ear-split yogis who wear large earrings as a sign of initiation).
